Stanley C. McDermott, PharmD, MS, Director & Head

Dr. Stan McDermott is the Director and Head of the Center for Clinical Trials and Product Development (CCTPD), one of five Centers of Innovation at the Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron (ABIA).  Stan joined ABIA one and a half (1.5) years ago and has been working to promote clinical research related activities within the ABIA partnership including both industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated studies.  His CCTPD Center was officially launched in January 2012 and provides clinical product development and regulatory services enabling partners and biomedical companies to realize optimal development strategy, clinical trial implementation and marketing approval.  CCTPD emphasizes clinical trials and medical device/biopharmaceutical product development.

Stan has over 30 years of experience working in Pharmaceutical Development and biosciences with emphasis on clinical development and specific experience within clinical research, project management and general management.  He has had oversight of multiple clinical development activities including global cardiovascular programs, and served as the General Manager for the Quintiles multifunctional site in Overland Park, KS.  His responsibilities have spanned the full range of clinical drug development from protocol writing and start-up to project operations and closeout, clinical study report writing, NDA preparation, submission and defense.  He has worked in both US and global development efforts across a number of therapeutic areas.  His leadership positions in public and private sectors have included pharmaceutical sponsors, a contract research organization (CRO) and biomedical research.

Stan holds doctoral and BS degrees in Pharmacy along with a Master of Science degree in Pharmacology from the University of Missouri – Kansas City.

Rob Ngungu, RAC, Director, Regulatory Affairs & Product Development Strategy

Rob Ngungu is the Director of Regulatory Affairs and Product Development Strategy at ABIA’s Center for Clinical Trials and Product Development. Mr. Ngungu has over 30 years of drug / device development experience leading to global registrations, approvals and post-market surveillance programs. His area of emphasis is in product development and regulatory strategies and compliance, clinical trial design, pharmacovigilance, and risk mitigation in quality systems for drugs, biologics and devices.

Mr. Ngungu has also served on various Industry / FDA taskforces, delivered lectures on drug and device development topics such as “Integrated Pharmaceutical Medicine”, and “Medical Device Regulations”. Mr Ngungu has led global development teams from small companies to large Fortune 500 companies. He started his career at Johnson and Johnson, followed by several years BMS, including VP Regulatory / Compliance and Clinical Development positions at Inamed, OraSure Technologies, and Zila Biotechnology.

Mr. Ngungu has a broad range of expertise across several therapeutic areas. Mr. Ngungu holds Mechanical Engineering and Applied Health Sciences degrees from London, UK.

Vicki England Patton, MS, Coordinator

Vicki England Patton provides coordination and administrative support, and assists in client interactions and event management for CCTPD.  Vicki is also active on CCTPD committees, attends planning sessions and supports communications.  Prior to joining ABIA, Vicki’s career included over fifteen years at The University of Akron in the Institute of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, The College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, and as Assistant Director for the Western Reserve District 5 Science Fair.  Vicki has also worked as Administrative Assistant to the Director of The Rubber Division, ACS planning national meetings and expositions, and as Legal Secretary for The Summit County Prosecutor in both criminal and civil divisions.

Vicki currently is a certified United States Professional Tennis Association, (USPTA) Pro 1, tennis professional.  Additionally, she is an American Council on Exercise (ACE) certified personal trainer and holds current certification with Red Cross CPR/AED adult and infant. Vicki holds a M.S. in Exercise Physiology, B.S. in Business Administration with a minor degree in Entrepreneurship, as well as an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Business Management Technology.
